MALUNGON, Sarangani – The Bureau of Internal Revenue have started its massive tax drive in nearby city of General Santos and all comprising seven municipalities of Sarangani Province, following the official launching of its tax campaign that was highlighted Monday (February 24) with the presentation of chosen top taxpayers at Phela Grande Convention Center in General Santos City.
Among those that have caught the attention of less than a thousand people in attendance was the ‘unexpected’ appearance on stage of Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao, who was for the second time, cited by BIR as one among the string of ‘Top Taxpayers’ in the whole of Central Mindanao Region. This is despite of the ongoing tax case that is being contested by both BIR and the fighting Congressman, in the Court of Appeals.
In line of the heightened tax info-drive, Revenue District Officer (RDO) Venerando Homez said taxmen will soon be scouring their various designated areas of jurisdiction to remind Juan Dela Cruz of his unpaid tax dues, and reecho the fast approaching April 15 deadline in the payment of income tax returns.
As this develops, Homez likewise reminded taxpayers’ of the planned implementation of stiffer BIR penalties specifically against the suspected tax cheats.
During the official opening of its “2014 tax campaign and public briefing on the importance of new BIR forms,” BIR Deputy Commissioner Nelson S. Aspe have urged taxpayers to settle their unpaid taxes in the government. He said paying taxes will not only benefit BIR district 110 to achieve the assigned 2014 annual tax collection goal of more or less P2 billion, but “this is for the good of the entire Filipino nation that is in dire need of ample government assistance, maintenance, construction and renovation of public schools, gov’t-run hospitals, health services and other government-funded amenities.”
“I am appealing for taxpayers to properly remit your taxes at the local tax district. After all, I am certain that our national government is always very much willing to return these favors to you and your respective families – in quite a lot of folds,” said Aspe, who also explained BIR’s raison d'être in choosing Pacquiao as among the best taxpayers of the city.
Reports said tax officials cited Pacquiao after he topped the amount of revenue payments for the non-value added tax and individual taxpayers’ remittances in year 2012.
Homez said Pacquiao paid P420-million taxes in 2012 wherein more or less P397M of which was remitted to the BIR Central Office, while more or less P23M was shared/remitted at the local tax district.
In a brief message, Pacquiao said ‘Give BIR what is due to BIR. This is an affirmation of our commitment to nation building. And to the officials of the Bureau of Internal Revenue, that I and my wife Vice Governor Jinkee Jamora-Pacquiao are conveying the Filipino people that it is our duty and responsibility to pay our taxes. While on the other hand, we will do what we can to help ensure that the government will be more accountable in properly spending the taxes that are collected from every Filipino,” Pacquiao said.
